History of diabetes.
I did some research and discovered that diabetes was already known in 1500 bc. That time in Egypt it was known by the fact that people urinated a lot and lost weight.
Diabetes has not been recognized as what they call a “clinical entity” until in 1812 there was a publication in the New England journal of medicine and surgery.
Until that time it was unknown and there was no idea what caused it and what treatment options there were.
It was not until 1889 that Joseph von Mering and Oscar Minkowski discovered that the pancreas had an essential role in controlling the glucose levels.
Dr. Edward Sharpy-Schafer discovered in 1910 that our pancreas produced a chemical that he called insulin and that this chemical with people with diabetes had a deficiency.
In 1921 they were able to produce insulin and many people were treated with it and lots of lives were saved. Before insulin became available many, most of the time, young people died a painful dead in in a matter of weeks or months.
Prevention and treatment
There are many ways to prevent and treat diabetes. But all of them agree on the fact that one of the best things to do is some major life style changes which should include.
- Lose weight
- Eat healthy
- Be more active
We all have heard this before probably, but it is not easy to stay motivated.
These tips and the use of medication are most of the time enough to keep your blood sugar levels in control.
Here is a link to a post about => staying motivated with diabetes <=
The best tip I have read was to take it one step at the time.
Picking up new habits and getting rid of old ones is a process that takes time. Stay realistic in your expectations and you will be able to do this without falling back in one of your old habits.
Take control of your diabetes and live a healthier life.
